Checking In On Parkinsons Patient

Elissa Harrington

Eugene - Kevin Watts says he could have never predicted how his adult life played out. He had two daughters, coached high school basketball, and eleven years ago was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. His disease became so advanced medication barely helped. Last March he went under deep brain stimulation surgery, to stop those uncontrolled movements. Kevin and his wife Candy says this past year has been tough, but good. “It has been a real adjustment, a positive one none the less,” Watts explains. Kevin’s uncontrolled movements have stopped, he has put on 30 pounds, traveled with his wife, and do things many take for granted. Like with any surgery, this one had risks. Kevin has troubles with balance, and with his memory. Kevin says he would do the surgery again in a heartbeat, and through his story may inspire others with Parkinson’s to stay positive. Look at options, and most importantly never give up. “Things are going to get better. They are going to find a cure for it someday. It will probably be too late for me, but it won’t be for the next one that comes along,” Kevin explains.
